Early February 2020. My first back surgery. A rehabilitation facility. On television, a virus in Wuhan, a city in China. People wearing masks. I barely noticed-- I thought masks had always been part of daily life there. Then the images shifted. People dying. Lungs failing. I remembered trying to learn how to swim-- how my breath wouldn’t cooperate, How frightening it was to lose that simple rhythm. To imagine no breath at all-- That woke me. Art kept me. It kept me steady while the world fractured. I painted hundreds of small works-- mostly abstract-- As days blurred and fear pressed in. Over time, the paintings changed. Abstraction moved toward the street. |
